Cihat Askin - Turkish violinist Cihat Askin seduces you with exquisite texture and
captures the soul of the score with not only bow and string, but with
a suspended breath and that which is indefinably expressed between the
lines.
Though well schooled and lauded in the classical European repertoire
and technique, Mr. Askin has carved a captivating niche for himself
with music old and new from his native Turkey and surrounding
countries of Greece, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Macedonia. His
remarkable musical output shows diligent research, offering up
delicate arrangements and ardent interpretations of material
containing the heart and soul of his ancestry.
|
Mr. Askin's discography covers a wide range of music from folkloric
arrangements to standard classical fare to scores hot off the press.
Of particular note is the collaboration with Turkish composer Emre
Araci, whose
descriptive violin concerto "Bosphorus by Moonlight" was recently recorded by
Askin. Both composer and violinist organically capture the Turkish
"hüzün": a melancholy of ancient longing and inescapable heartbreak.
